![]() Why Use A Drum Composter?
Rotating the drum allows an abundance of rich oxygen to get at the aerobic, oxygen loving bacteria that decompose the waste matter in the composter. Mixing material in the drum regulates the moisture, heat, and oxygen of the entire bin rather than just the portion that is being mixed.
Perhaps the biggest problem with traditional garden composters has been the need to wait for a batch to finish before adding new material. In a Sun-Mar, material moves continuously through the unit and through the composting process. No need to wait. Composting is ongoing.
Adding & Removing Compost
Wnen filling the composter slide the feed port open, add waste, shut the port and rotate the drum. The input or feed port is only 29" high so it's easy to add material. You will need to make sure you add dried leaves/grass/sawdust or other brown matter if you are adding wet green matter like kitchen vegetable scraps.
When the compost drum is more than half full, unscrew and remove the output port, rotate the drum, and compost will drop into a bushel basket or other container.
To remove compost when the drum is less than half full (before it has traveled back along the inner drum), open the feed port and rotate the drum.
